How to Play American Mahjong: A Beginner's Guide
American Mahjong is more than a game — it is a social ritual. This beginner's guide walks you through the essentials, the tiles, the Charleston and the road to your first "Mahjong!"
1. The Essentials
To begin your journey, you'll need a few essentials that blend tradition with modern elegance.
- The SetA standard American set contains 166 tiles (including the crucial 8 Jokers).
- The CardEvery year, the National Mah Jongg League (NMJL) releases a new card with winning patterns. You'll need this to win!
- The Gear4 racks and pushers to hold your tiles and extend your "wall".
2. Understanding the Tiles
Unlike other versions, American Mahjong features unique symbols designed for clarity and artistic flair.
- The SuitsDots, Bams (Bamboos), and Craks (Characters).
- The HonorsWinds (North, East, West, South) and Dragons (Red, Green, and White/Soap).
- The WildsThe Joker. These are your best friends — they can substitute for any tile in a combination of 3 or more.
- The Flowers8 Flower tiles that add luck and beauty to your hand.
3. The Charleston
The Charleston is the heart of the American game — a fast-paced ritual of passing tiles to curate your perfect hand.
- The First PassRight, Over, Left.
- The Second PassLeft, Over, Right (Optional).
- The Courtesy PassA final optional trade between across-the-table players. Tip: this is where the strategy begins — pay attention to what your neighbors are passing!
4. The Gameplay Loop
Strategy meets serendipity. The game flows in a rhythm of picking and discarding.
- PickingOn your turn, draw a tile from the wall.
- DiscardingPlace a tile in the center and announce its name clearly (e.g., "Three Bam!").
- Calling a TileIf someone discards a tile you need to complete a "Pung", "Kong", or "Quint", you can call it — but be prepared to reveal that part of your hand!
5. How to Win
The ultimate goal: be the first to complete a hand matching one of the patterns on the official NMJL card.
- The Mahjong! When you have all 14 tiles required for a specific pattern, shout "Mahjong!" and reveal your winning hand. It's time to celebrate — and perhaps pour another round of cocktails.
